This is a day when all Sri Lankan Tamils remember those who perished the last days of the civil war.
Every year on May 18, Tamil communities around the world stop to remember the civilians who died in the final weeks of Sri Lanka’s civil war in 2009. Families were caught in a shrinking strip of land on the island’s northeast coast, in an area now known as Mullivaikkal. United Nations estimates put the civilian death toll in the tens of thousands. Many families here still do not know what happened to relatives who disappeared in those weeks.
Our gathering in Cary is a quiet, public remembrance: lamps lit, a moment of silence, readings, and space for families to say the names of the people they lost. Anyone who wants to stand with this community is welcome — you don’t need a connection to Sri Lanka to come and remember.
